My shiny new Doctor Who Review for A Town Called Mercy
In which I talk about gender fluidity, the morality of The Doctor, the ageing habits of The Ponds and Back to the Future III.

This one has fancy graphics and a new hopefully more straight forward 11 bullet point system to help me stop rambling and to encourage me to be more optimistic about things.

Hopefully y’all will like it.

Issues with “official” outings in the celebrity sphere

While I completely respect a persons right to state their sexuality whenever they want to I find it annoying that media always has to spin celebrities “coming out” as somehow “official”; it as if the person isn’t actually the sexuality label they’ve been living as until it is stated as 100% true to a tabloid.

It is also completely bias as you never hear news of a heterosexual celebrity as coming out as hetero the magazine headline simply reads as “new woman and/or man on the scene”. They are more interested in who they are dating as opposed to the sexuality of the celebrity in question because obviously they are straight right? How assumptions of you.

If a male celebrity is seen taking a close male companion out to coffee or a sports game rumours spread about them being gay instead of just saying “new man on the scene” because they assume that prior to this candid moment Celeb A and Celeb B were straight and now they could have a scandal on their hands!

I get this is what makes stories sell but something about having to have diverse sexualities announced and given the official seal of approval bothers me; partly because it feels like their feelings were not valid in the public eye before then, even if that celebrity had never denied rumours, and party because what if they later fall for someone of the opposite gender or someone on the transgender spectrum or any other spectrum for that matter? Would you dare to call them a liar? They have after all made an official statement.

Who exactly is benefiting from this official statement anyway? The partner and close family and friends of the celebrity clearly already know how they are living and loving. It leads to comments about Neil Patrick Harris and other queer actors performances such as, “I can’t believe he is gay! I mean Barney is such a womaniser”. It is called acting. What does their sexuality have to do with anything? Does anyone watch House and think, “I can’t believe Hugh Laurie isn’t a doctor, his diagnoses are incredible!”? Anyone? No? Didn’t think so.

This Space for Vent

Everyone has had their little stand and rant on a soap box about “Elementary” the new CBS series based on Sherlock Holmes and I’ve decided to share my thoughts and feelings on the matter.

I am not concerned about them swapping the gender of John. As long as they keep the character as a strong army Doctor. John Watson in the Arthur Conan Doyle stories isn’t as hard edged as the BBC series and does seem to just dote on Sherlock and follow him about from case to case occasionally making good observations and providing a place for Sherlock to stay. This is all well and good but if the CBS were trying to show a strong female character working along side an leading male they hopefully will not have her simply sighing dreamily at his “brilliant deductions” and writing it all down in her journal like some kind of fangirl. That would be all kinds of bad.

I am not concerned about the possibility of them removing all the homoerotic subtext because ACD never stated that he wrote it in intentionally. They were different times where “queer” and “intimate friends” had different meanings in society.
Yes the BBC series has hinted at it, yes Tumblr has taken an inch and run miles and miles with it and this is all very wonderful but not essential to the dynamics of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. They just need to be a dynamic duo who solve crimes that the police are no good at. For example Poirot and Hastings from Agatha Christie’s novels have almost no homoerotic subtext (unless you really want to put it there) and everything is just as wonderful both on paper and on screen.

I AM concerned that the asexual ways of Sherlock from the BBC series will be lost. I know that Moffat keeps changing his mind about whether Sherlock is asexual or just abstaining or just doesn’t care at all but majority leans in favour of asexuality which is a marvellous thing because asexuality hardly ever gets a look in. Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory also exhibits asexual tendencies but almost all his flatmates find him an intelligent, egocentric, eccentric pratt that they would rather not have in their lives so they mock him constantly.
This annoys me greatly as Sheldon has many redeemable qualities, as does Sherlock. It bothers me that the only two prevalent asexual characters currently on TV seem to be portrayed as anti-social hyper-intelligent beings with Aspergian like traits and poor understanding of social norms.
For the record Aspergers does not equal asexuality and asexuality does not equal Aspergian or Autistic likes traits, but that is an entirely separate rant.

True CBS may make Johnny Lee Miller’s Sherlock asexual. They may not. It doesn’t really matter because Sherlock Holmes in the Guy Richie films is almost certainly sexually and romantically involved with Irene Adler. Not to mention in the film franchise (and most likely in the BBC series) John Watson marries Mary. There was never any solid foundation that John and Sherlock were in a romantic relationship. You can call them soul-mates. You can call them intimate acquaintances. But it is deep companionship and everything else isn’t cannon.

In summary my main concern is that John Watson’s role becoming a female role may have her running after Sherlock like Eliza Dolittle runs after Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady. Yes they worked together to achieve a goal, yes Eliza has strong personality traits but ultimately she gets portrayed as a love sick doormat who fetches an ungrateful and arrogant man’s slippers. Sure I would have preferred it if both Sherlock and John were swapped for female actors but that isn’t going to happen this time round and in the meantime we have fanart.

So before you start making CAPSLOCK post after CAPSLOCK post about how much is will suck that Sherlock and John wont be “getting their gay on” just stop and have a think about whether slash is the whole point of this story. And for those who DO think that slash is the whole point of fandom remember that slash can always be there if you want it to be there.
For all we know there will be asexuality, homoerotic subtext and forward thinking gender roles. We can only sit in wait and hope that they make a somewhat decent show that does the ACD stories justice, like House momentarily did, and if they don’t we just switch it off and go back to our lives.

Being Juliet: I understand that sometimes being able to put a label on yourself can...

beingjuliet:

I understand that sometimes being able to put a label on yourself can make you or other people feel a sense of self, or a sense of belonging, less alone. But sometimes I think the world would be a better place if we didn’t label human sexuality. If everyone would just be and we made no fuss and…

I am inclined to agree with a lot of this. I understand that labels can make people feel safe and accepted but for each new “category” or “definition” we create a new set of outcasts who are excluded from a certain group. I know that in present society we can’t all just “be” but I quite like the idea of not having to go around identifying as something just so other people have a place to put you.
At the end of the day who you love should only matter to those people you are sharing your love with and if you want to share that with the world so be it but it shouldn’t have to separate anyone.

‘Fat’ is usually the first insult a girl throws at another girl when she wants to hurt her.

I mean, is ‘fat’ really the worst thing a human being can be? Is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’, ‘jealous’, ‘shallow’, ‘vain’, ‘boring’ or ‘cruel’? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I’m not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain…

I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn’t seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’

‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed, ‘the last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’

What I felt like saying was, ‘I’ve produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren’t either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!

I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. And frankly, I’d rather they didn’t give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.

WHOA WHOA WHOA ! BEST VIDEO EVER !

i teared up.

holy tears of amazing joy.

Ok so this is actually beautifully amazing.

Will always reblog ♥

This gives me some hope that some of the people in this world are intelligent

It has been too long since I reblogged something as important as this.
It really does get better. And I dont mean that in a way that only relates to issues of sexuality. Just life in general. Being a teenager, being an adult, being human, it can be damn difficult at times but there is always hope for the future and things do improve.
A smile, a hug, a cupcake, your favourite song on the radio, a stranger commenting on your blog post, all these smalls things add up. It doesnt all have to be big gestures. Just all be there for one another and support and accept each other.

It will get better. And it does get better. But you need to live in order to see the change.
